    What we do

Chimney Scaffolding across Cambridge and East Anglia

Chimney work happens at the highest and most exposed point of a house, so a proper scaffold rather than a ladder is the safe way to do it. We build chimney scaffolds with a working platform at stack level, safe access up through the lifts and edge protection around the work area, all erected to TG20:21 and SG4:22.

Chimney scaffolding starts from around £600. The final price depends on the height of the house, where the stack sits on the roof and what the job involves, and we confirm it in writing after a free site visit. We work for homeowners, roofers, bricklayers and builders across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire and Essex.

    In detail

    Chimney Scaffolding: what we cover

    Chimney repointing

Mortar joints on a chimney stack take the worst of the weather and wear out faster than the rest of the house. Repointing a stack properly takes time at the top of the roof, so the platform goes in at stack level with room for the bricklayer, the mortar and the tools.

    • Boarded platform at stack level
    • Guard rails and toe boards all round
    • Room for materials at working height

    Chimney rebuilds and removals

Where a stack is beyond repointing it has to come down to a sound course and be rebuilt, or come off altogether and the roof made good. Either way bricks and debris have to come down safely, so the scaffold is planned around the work rather than just the height. If the roof is opened up, we can add a temporary roof to keep the house dry.

    • Planned for materials up and debris down
    • Platform for the roofer to make the roof good
    • Temporary roof available if the roof is opened

    Lead flashing and soakers

Failed lead flashing and soakers are one of the most common causes of damp around a chimney breast. Replacing them means working right where the stack meets the roof, so the platform is set to give the roofer safe access around the stack. If you need the chimney work done as well, our domestic roofing team rebuilds and repoints stacks with the scaffold included.

    • Access around all sides of the stack
    • Set at the height the roofer needs
    • Protection where the scaffold sits close to the roof

    Flue liners, cowls and pots

Stove and fire installations need work at the very top of the flue: liners dropped down the stack, new pots, cowls and bird guards. A chimney scaffold gives the installer a stable platform at the pot instead of a ladder on the roof.

    • Platform at chimney pot height
    • Suits stove and flue installers
    • Flexible hire for short jobs

    Storm damage and making safe

After high winds a loose pot or a leaning stack is a danger to the house and anyone underneath it. We look at the stack, build access so it can be made safe and repaired, and set the hire period around your roofer’s repair. For other work on the house, see our domestic scaffolding page.

    • Access to make a damaged stack safe
    • Built around the repair your roofer plans

    Straight answers

Chimney Scaffolding questions we get asked

Do I need scaffolding to repoint a chimney?

In almost all cases yes. Work on a chimney is work at height on a sloping, fragile surface, and the safe way to do it is from a boarded platform with guard rails rather than off a ladder. Most roofers and bricklayers will not quote the job without a scaffold in place.

How much does chimney scaffolding cost?

Chimney scaffolding starts from around £600. The price goes up with the height of the house, where the stack sits on the roof, whether the scaffold has to be built out over the roof, access down the side of the property, whether a neighbour’s land or a footpath is involved, and how long the scaffold is needed. We quote free and in writing after a site visit.

How long does it take to put up a chimney scaffold?

Most chimney scaffolds on a two storey house go up in a day. Bigger or more awkward properties can take longer, and we will tell you which yours is at the site visit.

Can you scaffold a chimney on a terraced house?

Yes. The access route and whether the platform crosses a neighbouring roof line both need agreeing first, so we look at it on the site visit and tell you what permissions you need.

Will the scaffold damage my roof tiles?

It should not. Where the scaffold has to reach a stack away from the wall, it is built off its own structure rather than bearing on the tiles, and we use protection where anything sits close to the roof covering.

How long will the scaffold need to stay up?

That follows your bricklayer or roofer rather than us. Repointing is often a few days, a rebuild longer. Tell us the planned duration and we will set the hire period to match, and extend it if the work runs on.

Do you cover my area for chimney work?

We are based in Cambridge and cover Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire and Essex, including Ely, Huntingdon, St Ives, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough. Call 01223 411 377 with your postcode.

I recently had a dormer window installed into my loft extension, I was recommended the company by a friend who received a quality service. On arrival they were professional and meticulous, they were also tidy and efficient, I had updates previous to their arrival and was given notice before they finished. They maintained a clean and friendly operation. Everything was completed on schedule and I would pass on contact details of Priority Scaffolding to anybody that would appreciate a 10/10 service.
